How to Make Snow Ice Cream

I’m a true winter person – I love the snow. And that’s something I’m hoping to pass down to my kids. I figure there is no better way to turn my kids into snow lovers than to turn that snow into one of their favorite things – dessert. Snow ice cream is a silly winter treat that’s simple, nostalgic, and perfect for making with kids. Even better, it turns some things you already have in your kitchen and a bowl of fresh snow into a sweet family memory.
This is one of those activities that feels like a tradition in the making – and something your kids will remember long after they grow up and move away, and something that will make them smile and look back fondly every time those first big flakes start falling from the sky.
What Is Snow Ice Cream?
Snow ice cream is an old fashioned winter treat made by mixing clean, freshly fallen snow with milk (or cream), sugar, and vanilla. The result is a soft, scoopable ice cream with a light, fluffy texture—almost like soft serve.
It’s been made for generations whenever the weather cooperates, and kids love the novelty of eating something made from snow. It shares the “snow treat” vibes that our Snow Candy has, but also is something that kids will probably ask for more than once a season…
Is It Safe to Eat Snow?
This is the most common question, and it’s an important one.
Snow can be safe to eat if you’re careful and selective about what you use.
Snow Safety Guidelines
Use only fresh, clean snow from the top layer of a recent snowfall.
Do not collect snow near roads, sidewalks, driveways, roofs, or treated areas.
Choose untouched snow from a clean backyard or open space.
For extra peace of mind, place a clean bowl outside while it’s snowing and let the snow fall directly into it instead of scooping from the ground. This is the only way I’ll do it. And, it gives kids the extra excitement of anticipating a big snow fall – putting their bowl outside in preparation.

- Sugar
- Vanilla extract
Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.
3. Combine With Snow
Slowly pour the milk mixture over the snow, gently stirring as you go. Add a little at a time until you reach your desired ice cream consistency.
