DIY Outdoor Car Track for Kids

My boys are absolutely cars obsessed. Any kinds of cars, although we do know the entire cast of Cars by name (Smokey is a personal favorite, but how clever is Brent Mustangburger??). We are constantly finding toy cars… well, everywhere. They’re inside, they’re outside. They’re in the bath, they’re in the car seat. They’re in the kitchen cupboards… honestly at this point I’m not sure there’s a place I haven’t found cars. If your kids love racing toy cars, trucks, or construction vehicles, anywhere near as much as ours, this simple DIY outdoor car track is the perfect backyard addition! Using 1×6 boards and a little creativity, you can create a customizable play road that encourages outdoor play AND keeps kids occupied for a solid amount of time.
Now, I would not say my husband or I are extremely comfortable with home projects, and this was DEFINITELY comfortable. Easy enough that the boys were able to do quite a bit of the painting and sanding as well! So, when I tell you this is a simple DIY project, I really mean it.
Why We Loved This Project
- Easy and budget-friendly: Just a few boards, paint, and sealer.
- Customizable: Build long straightaways, turns, intersections, and parking lots.
- Portable and modular: Rearrange the track anytime for new play scenarios.
- Built to last: Sealed for durability and outdoor use.
How We Made It
Materials Needed
- 1×6 pine or cedar boards, cut into lengths between 1 and 3 feet
- Black outdoor paint (flat or satin finish)
- Yellow outdoor paint or paint pen for center lines
- Exterior-grade clear sealer (polyurethane or spar urethane)
- Sandpaper (medium to fine grit)
- Painter’s tape (optional, for neat lines)
- Tape Measure (optional, for straight even lines)
- Foam or bristle brush or paint roller
- Drop cloth or workspace
Instructions
1. Cut and Prep Your Boards
Cut your 1×6 boards to a variety of lengths between 1 and 3 feet. OR buy them already at that length and save a step. Don’t sleep on the random pieces bins that most home improvement stores have either. We’ve found great pieces of different sizes there. Varying sizes give the track more flexibility and makes it easy to reconfigure.
Sand all surfaces and edges smooth to prevent splinters—especially important for little hands.
Tip: If your kids like ramps or bridges, sand down a few blocks as well. You can place them underneath to lift the board to different angles.
2. Paint the Roads

Lay your boards out on a drop cloth and apply 1–2 coats of black outdoor paint. Let dry fully between coats. This forms the base “asphalt” of your track.
Once dry, use yellow paint or a paint pen to add a center line down the middle. You can use painter’s tape for clean edges or go freehand for a more playful look. Because I am, lowkey, a perfectionist, I not only went the painter’s tape route but also measured to ensure that my center line was directly in the middle and the lines were evenly spaced.
Design Ideas:
- Straightaways
- Curves or T-junctions (cut boards diagonally or use angled edges)
- Parking spaces (paint rectangles on wider sections)
- Construction zones (add orange stripes!)
3. Seal for Outdoor Use
Once the paint is completely dry, apply an exterior-rated clear sealer to protect against moisture, sun, and dirt. Follow manufacturer instructions for dry time and number of coats (typically 2–3 coats).
Let the boards cure for at least 24–48 hours before use outdoors.
How to Use Your Outdoor Tracks
- Arrange tracks on grass, gravel, or patio surfaces
- Create cities with chalk houses and stores that they can drive to on the board road
- Add play houses, cones, and signs to make a full play world
- Store in a covered bin, shed, or garage to extend life between play sessions
Variations and Add-Ons
- Add numbers or road signs: Paint or stencil speed limits, stop signs, cross walks or town names.
- Create themed sets: Farm roads, construction zones, or race tracks.
- Upgrade with handles: Drill small finger holes or attach rope handles for easy carrying. *This is a future project for us, so expect another post once we actually accomplish it.*
To be honest, making this outdoor race track was actually a lot of fun for my boys too. They loved getting to help and the ownership of this being THEIR track helps them to want to take good care of it (HUGE bonus with my destructors)!! Overall, this DIY outdoor car track is a fun, hands-on project that brings hours of open-ended play to your backyard. It comes highly recommended from a couple of car loving kiddos around here!
