Hands down, one of my favorite ways to preserve summer fruits is freezer jam—it captures the freshness of ripe fruit at its peak and locks it away for me to enjoy in the pit of winter, like my own little sunshiney vacation. And to make it even better, unlike traditional canning, freezer jam is quick, beginner-friendly, and doesn’t require any special equipment. Just fresh fruit, sugar, pectin, and a little freezer space. It was easy to come up with this list of our favorite freezer jam recipes!

If you’ve ever wanted to stock your kitchen with homemade jam but felt intimidated by canning (or realized that it’s just a lot of work and a lot of room for error), these recipes are for you. Freezer jam is one of my favorite ways to use up fresh fruit and be able to enjoy it year round, while still enjoying the process of making it.

How Is Freezer Jam Different from Regular Jam?

One of the biggest questions I had when I started making jam: what makes freezer jam different from traditional jam? The biggest difference comes down to the process. It is not, in fact, just jam that you store in the freezer, as I once thought. Here’s the differences:

  • No Canning Required – Traditional jam is cooked on the stovetop and sealed in sterilized jars using a water bath canner. Freezer jam skips all of that—no special equipment, no canning knowledge needed.
  • Fresh Fruit Flavor – Because freezer jam uses less cooking (or none at all), the fruit tastes brighter, fresher, and more like the fruit you just picked. Regular jam, on the other hand, is simmered longer, which gives it a deeper, caramelized flavor.
  • Storage – Freezer jam sets up in the fridge after 24 hours and is then stored in the freezer for up to a year. Traditional jam is shelf-stable and can be kept in the pantry until opened.
  • Texture – Freezer jam often has a softer, looser texture with more fruit pieces, while regular jam tends to be thicker and more uniform.

Both types are delicious, but freezer jam is the perfect choice if you want something quick, easy, and as close to fresh fruit as you can get in spreadable form.

Tools & Equipment You’ll Need for Freezer Jam

One of the best parts about freezer jam is how little equipment you need. Unlike traditional canning, you don’t need a canner, special jars, or hours of prep time (and a few annoying trips to the grocery store). Just a few basic tools and you’re ready to go:

  • Mixing Bowls – A couple of large bowls for fruit, sugar, and pectin mixtures.
  • Potato Masher or Fork – To crush the fruit into that chunky, spreadable consistency.
  • Measuring Cups & Spoons – Accuracy is important in jam making, so measuring tools are a must.
  • Saucepan – For cooking the pectin and water mixture before combining it with the fruit.
  • Ladle or Funnel – Makes transferring jam into containers much less messy.
  • Freezer-Safe Containers or Jars – Plastic freezer containers, mason jars, or any airtight container with lids will work. Just leave a little headspace for expansion. You already know that these are my favorite lids if you’ve checked out any of my other posts.
  • Labels or Tape & Marker – Always date your containers so you’ll know when you made them and aren’t playing the guessing game of how long it’s been lost in your freezer for.

That’s it! No canners, no special equipment, no stress. Just simple tools you probably already have in your kitchen.
