We love a good sensory bin/sensory table activity. In fact, we love them so much that we now have two of this sensory table – an indoor and an outdoor play area. And honestly, between the two, they’re used pretty much every day. We cycle through the old standbys, but without a doubt, one of the top requested bin activities is…. Animal Wash.

Need a quick, engaging activity that requires minimal set up? Well here it is. It is as straight forward as they come, but I should really give this bin more credit than that. An animal wash sensory bin is a fantastic way to combine water play with pretend play, fine motor skill development, and even some early science concepts. But really, the best part is it’s super easy to set up using toys and materials you probably (definitely) already have at home.

Why Sensory Bins Are Great for Toddlers

Sensory bins offer hands-on opportunities for toddlers to explore different textures, practice coordination, and build language skills through play. It helps kids become comfortable with different textures and ideas in a safe setting, and also helps to regulate and calm emotions. This particular bin is perfect for animal lovers and adds a practical life component—cleaning!

What You’ll Need

  • Plastic animal toys (farm animals, zoo animals, etc. any of the small little people type animals that you are probably picking up every day anyway work great)
  • A large bin or shallow container (we use the sensory table and love it)
  • Warm water
  • A few drops of tear-free soap or baby shampoo (if your kids are older, dawn dish soap works just fine)
  • Sponges, brushes, or toothbrushes (for scrubbing)
  • Towels or washcloths (for drying)
  • Optional: bubbles, small cups, food coloring

How to Set It Up

  1. Fill the bin with warm water and a drop or two of tear-free soap. Give it a good swish to create bubbles.
  2. Place the animals next to the bin, encouraging your toddler to get them “dirty” first—maybe using dirt, shaving cream, or washable paint if you’re feeling adventurous! We usually just set the outdoor table next to a muddy spot in the lawn or fill a second tub with dirt/mud and call it good.
  3. Provide scrubbers and brushes so your toddler can give each animal a good wash.
  4. Set out a towel area where your child can dry the animals when they’re clean.
  5. Add in cups or squirt bottles for pouring and rinsing to extend the fun.
  6. Ta-Da! That’s it. Be amazed at how long this entertains your child!

Play Ideas and Extensions

  • Talk about each animal as it’s being washed. What sound does it make? Where does it live?
  • Sort animals by habitat or size after they’re clean.
  • Involve siblings by making it a “pet spa” or vet clinic.
  • Add colored water or natural elements like leaves and rocks for extra sensory exploration.

Clean-Up Tips

Place a towel underneath the sensory bin to catch spills and make clean-up easier. This activity is perfect to take outdoors on warm days, or in the bathtub for less mess.

Why Toddlers Love It

Water + bubbles + animals = endless fun! Animal wash sensory bin sparks imagination and gives kids a sense of responsibility as they “care” for their animals. Also, it involves mud (and messy play) so it’s a winner in my house. It’s a great way to sneak in learning while having a blast.
