Grinch Expanding Heart Stress Ball – Easy DIY Kids Craft

Looking for a simple and fun Christmas craft for kids that brings a little bit of Grinchy cheer? This Grinch Expanding Heart Stress Ball is such a fun tie in to the story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas — when his heart grew three sizes! Using just a balloon, flour, and a water bottle, kids can make their very own Grinch themed stress ball in minutes.
This easy sensory craft is perfect for holiday parties, Storytime paired event, classroom activities, or a quiet afternoon project at home.
Supplies You’ll Need

- 1 balloon (green for Grinch theme)
- 2/3 cup flour
- 1 empty plastic water bottle
- Funnel (optional, but helpful)
- Red Sharpie marker
How to Make a Grinch Growing Heart Stress Ball
- Draw the Grinch’s Heart:
Blow up your balloon a bit so it stretches out, then use a red Sharpie to draw a big heart on the side. This will be your Grinch’s “expanding heart” — just like in the story! - Fill the Bottle:
Use a funnel (or make one out of paper) to pour about 2/3 cup of flour into your empty plastic water bottle. - Attach the Balloon:
Blow up the balloon again (a little bigger than a grapefruit) but don’t tie it off. Carefully stretch the balloon’s neck over the top of the water bottle.
- Flip and Fill:
Hold the balloon and bottle together, then flip the bottle upside down. Let the flour slowly pour into the balloon. You might want to gently squeeze or shake the bottle to help the flour move. - Remove the Balloon:
Once filled, carefully remove the balloon from the bottle top. Gently let out the extra air while keeping the flour inside. A bit of flour will likely escape, that’s okay! - Tie and Squish:
Tie a tight knot at the top of the balloon — and you’ve got your very own Grinch expanding heart stress ball!
Clean Up Tip
If you’re crafting with younger kids, work over a baking sheet or tray to catch any spilled flour — it makes cleanup a breeze!
Things I Did That Made Things Harder Than It Should Be
- Used a paint pen instead of a sharpie – the harder point caused several popped balloons
- Tried to use too small of balloon – water balloon size or small balloon size seems helpful but actually it’s just harder to get it blown up and more likely to pop
- Didn’t work over a tray – especially while you’re releasing the air from the balloon, you’ll want to be somewhere with easy clean up. Some of the flour will inevitably come out with the air
- Didn’t wait for the sharpie to try before shrinking the balloon – now we have smudgy hearts and sharpie hands
Optional Add Ons
- Draw the Grinch’s face with a black marker if you’re really artistic!
- Try swapping the flour for cornstarch, rice, or kinetic sand for different squishy textures.
- Pair the craft with reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas and talk about kindness, feelings, and growing your heart.
Why Kids Love It
This is a hands-on, sensory craft that helps kids:
- Build fine motor skills while squeezing and shaping the balloon

It’s simple enough for preschoolers (with help) and still fun for older kids too!
