There’s something magical about spontaneous outdoor play. When the weather is nice, kids (and adults!) don’t need fancy toys or expensive gear to have fun—just a little space and some imagination. Becoming a parent, one of the most fun surprises for me was being able to play outside again.
I’d forgotten how fun it is to just run around like crazy, laughing and, well, playing.
Whether you’re organizing a backyard bash, a school recess, or just a neighborhood get-together, here’s a list of 20+ classic outdoor games that require zero equipment. Some can be played with just a couple people, some need several more.

1. Tag
The ultimate no-gear game. One person is “it” and tries to tag others. When someone is tagged, they become “it.” Fast, simple, and endlessly fun.
2. Freeze Tag
A variation of tag where tagged players must “freeze” in place until another player unfreezes them by tagging.
3. Color Tag
Before the game starts, “it” calls out a color. Players must quickly touch something of that color to be safe. Anyone not touching it can be tagged.
4. Red Light, Green Light
One person is the “traffic light.” Players move forward on “green light” and must freeze on “red light.” If anyone moves during red, they go back to the start.
5. Ghost in the Graveyard
A spooky twist on hide-and-seek played at dusk or in the dark. One ghost hides while the others count. Once found, everyone runs to base. The ghost tags players to turn them into ghosts too!
6. Kick the Can
A classic blend of hide-and-seek and tag. While “it” guards a can, others hide. Players try to kick the can without getting tagged.
7. Red Rover
Two teams form lines and call for a player from the other side to run and try to break through their joined hands. If they fail, they join the team that called them.
8. Mother May I?
Players take turns asking to move forward (“Mother, may I take 3 giant steps?”). “Mother” allows or modifies the request. The first to reach “Mother” wins.
9. Simon Says
One player gives commands beginning with “Simon says…” Players must follow only if “Simon says” is spoken first. If not, and someone does the action, they’re out.
10. Statues (or Red Light)
Similar to Red Light, Green Light. One person turns away while others move. When they turn around, everyone must freeze. If they catch someone moving, that player returns to start.
11. Sharks and Minnows
“Sharks” stand in the middle; “minnows” try to run across a field without being tagged. Tagged minnows become sharks.
12. Duck Duck Goose
Everyone sits in a circle. One person walks around tapping heads saying “duck,” until they pick a “goose.” The goose jumps up and tries to tag them before they get to the empty spot.
13. Shadow Tag
Regular tag, but you have to step on the person’s shadow to tag them. Perfect for sunny days!
14. Alley-Oop
A team-based running and dodging game often played in alleyways or tight spaces. Players zigzag or evade opponents while trying to reach the end without being tagged.
15. Follow the Leader
One player leads, and the rest copy their movements. Leaders can hop, crawl, spin, or whatever they want. Rotate leaders to keep it fresh.
16. Hide and Seek
A classic! One player counts with eyes closed while the others hide. The seeker then tries to find everyone.
17. Capture the Flag
Split into two teams with hidden “flags” or designated areas. The goal is to sneak into enemy territory, reach the base, take the flag, and escape without being tagged.
18. What Time Is It, Mr./Ms. Wolf?
One player is “Mr. Wolf,” and others ask, “What time is it?” Mr. Wolf answers with a time, and players step forward. When Mr. Wolf says “Dinner time!” they chase players back to the start.
19. Hopscotch (Drawn in Dirt or Chalk)
Draw a hopscotch grid on dirt or sand and hop through it. No rock needed—just pick a leaf or stick as a marker.
20. Sardines
A twist on hide-and-seek where one person hides and everyone else seeks. When someone finds the hider, they hide with them. Last one to find the group loses.
21. Monkey in the Middle
The “it” players toss a ball as players try to keep it away from the “monkey” in the middle.
22. Wink
One player is secretly chosen as the “murderer” and “kills” others by winking at them. Others try to guess who the murderer is before getting winked!
23. Leapfrog
Players squat in a line. The last one leaps over each person in front, then squats at the front. Repeat in turns for fun and giggles.
