It’s like sipping a warm Christmas cookie—sweet, buttery, and infused with that nostalgic, freshly baked happiness. What Is a Sugar Cookie Latte?
A sugar cookie latte is a creamy coffee drink made with espresso (or strong brewed coffee), steamed milk, and sugar cookie simple syrup—a sweet, rich syrup flavored with vanilla, almond, and a hint of sugar cookie nostalgia. The result is a smooth and cozy latte that tastes like a freshly baked sugar cookie in a mug. Made popular by Starbucks, this latte is an easy one to make at home and enjoy without needing to leave the warmth of your own home in the coldest winter months.
If you haven’t made your syrup yet, check out our Homemade Sugar Cookie Simple Syrup Recipe. It’s the key ingredient that turns an ordinary latte into something magical, and by far the hardest part of this recipe to perfect. Having the right syrup makes putting this latte together a breeze – faster than you can put a batch of pre shaped cookie dough sugar cookies in the oven!
Ingredients You’ll Need
- 1–2 shots of espresso (or ½ cup strong brewed coffee). This is my favorite espresso pods to use, but this espresso powder works great too!
- 1 cup milk of choice (whole milk, oat, or almond milk work great, I usually add a splash of half and half to make it extra creamy)
- 2–3 tablespoons Homemade Sugar Cookie Simple Syrup
- Whipped cream (optional but delightful)
- A sprinkle of crushed sugar cookies or holiday colored sprinkles for topping
How to Make a Sugar Cookie Latte
- Brew your coffee or espresso. Strong coffee gives the best flavor balance.
- Warm and froth your milk. Use a milk frother, steam wand, or gently heat it on the stove. If you have this electric frother, I tend to just add my sugar cookie syrup straight in while frothing. (Combines Step 2-4 into one!)
- Add syrup. Stir in 2–3 tablespoons of your sugar cookie syrup until combined.
- Assemble your latte. Pour the coffee into your mug, add the syrup, then top with frothed milk.
- Garnish. Enjoy as is or finish with Sugar Cookie Cold Foam and a sprinkle of cookie crumbs or cinnamon for that festive touch.
Hot vs. Iced Sugar Cookie Latte
This recipe works beautifully both hot and iced, depending on your mood or the season. In fact, I think I may prefer it as an iced latte, even though I tend to gravitate towards hot lattes and iced coffee most of the time.
Hot Sugar Cookie Latte
Perfect for chilly mornings or cozy nights. The warmth enhances the buttery vanilla flavors, making it taste like a cookie still warm out of the oven. Serve it in your favorite mug and sip slowly while watching your favorite holiday movie (hands down, The Santa Clause).
Iced Sugar Cookie Latte
Refreshing and sweetly nostalgic for warmer days—this is my go to afternoon coffee for having the energy to bake Christmas cookies or wrap presents. Use cold milk and espresso over ice, then stir in your sugar cookie syrup. Top with sugar cookie cold foam, sprinkles, and cookie crumbles for an iced treat that’s absolutely out of this world amazing.
Tips for the Perfect Sugar Cookie Latte
- Adjust sweetness: Start with 2 tablespoons of syrup and add more to taste.
- Use quality coffee: As someone who grew up thinking Folgers instant was thee coffee, I wish this wasn’t so, but a quality coffee really makes a difference in the end result in any latte. A smooth espresso or medium roast pairs best with the buttery sweetness.
- Make it festive: Add a touch more of almond extract, red and green sprinkles, or a splash of edible glitter for a holiday vibe.
- Batch your syrup: Keep your sugar cookie syrup in the fridge so you can whip up lattes all week long.
As the perfect addition to round out our sugar cookie favorites, this homemade Sugar Cookie Latte is all my favorite things. Cozy, comforting, and irresistibly festive, it’s the perfect drink to curl up with next to the Christmas tree, or perfect way to enjoy the flavors of the holidays any time of year. So grab your favorite Santa mug and your coziest blanket and enjoy a little sugar cookie magic at home.
